PLEXIGLAS® MOLDING COMPOUNDS FOR CAR BODY PARTS

Röhm has set the global standard with PMMA special molding compounds for non-transparent car body parts with class A surfaces. Leading international automotive manufacturers use PLEXIGLAS® Hi-Gloss for the entire range of robust, high-gloss trim parts, spoilers and lidar and camera covers on the vehicle exterior, as well as for emblems.

BENEFITS OF PLEXIGLAS® MOLDING COMPOUNDS FOR CAR BODY PARTS

Automotive manufacturers value PLEXIGLAS® Hi-Gloss molding compounds as a high-quality material that offers high weather resistance and color stability for all kinds of fully colored non-transparent car body parts. They can be used to manufacture car body parts with an elegant, glassy appearance, such as pillar covers, wind deflectors, exterior mirror housings, radiator grilles and spoilers. Translucent special colorings are available for lidar sensor and camera covers.

Properties of PLEXIGLAS® Hi-Gloss molding compounds

  • High-gloss surface (class A)
  • Extreme color depth for an elegant appearance
  • Outstanding UV and weather resistance
  • Robust surface – minor scratches are easy to polish out
  • High heat deflection temperature for structural stability
  • Dimensional stability
  • Good processability for efficient injection molding and reliable component production
  • Cost-efficiency and savings compared to coated systems

PLEXIGLAS® Hi-Gloss for piano black effect without coating

The excellent processing properties guarantee efficient injection molding and reliable component production. One key benefit of this is that the material is colored all the way through and does not need to be coated later on. This makes production more efficient and saves money, as well as making it easy to polish out minor scratches.

Röhm has developed the color “black 9V022” to cater for the demand for glossy black exterior car body parts – these are known as piano black applications, as their high-gloss deep black appearance is reminiscent of piano lacquer.

PLEXIGLAS® Hi-Gloss and PLEXIGLAS® Softlight for emblems

PLEXIGLAS® Hi-Gloss is also ideally suited to the emblems of automotive brands. The molding compounds are available in both black and a special white color for this application, for example as an alternative to chrome. When combined with backlit PLEXIGLAS® Softlight, even illuminated brand logos are an option.

Impact-resistant PLEXIGLAS® Hi-Gloss for lower body parts

The high-gloss PMMA molding compound is also available with a higher impact resistance. For example, PLEXIGLAS® Hi-Gloss NTA-5 is a highly impact-resistant material with a good heat deflection temperature. This makes it ideally suited for exterior applications that require greater resistance to stone chips, such as exterior mirror housings, the radiator grille or front aprons.

Special colorings for camera and lidar covers

PLEXIGLAS® molding compounds are also available in translucent special colorings for trim parts that conceal rear view cameras or lidar sensors for autonomous driving. Neutral gray colorings produce a black panel effect, enabling elements such as displays to be integrated into pillar panels. The infrared-transparent special coloring “black 90114” is available for lidar covers.
