PLEXIGLAS® Molding Compounds news
K 2010. CoverForm® - Surface for the most stringent requirements
Chemical-resistant surface with high scratch resistance to withstand extreme stress
One-step coating of PMMA components
Instrument covers in motor vehicles, nameplates on household appliances and display screens are exposed to high levels of permanent stress, but are required to show no scratches or traces of wear even after years of service. The system solution CoverForm®, which provides an extremely resistant surface, was developed precisely for components like these.
Coating defies abrasion and chemicals
The surface properties created by CoverForm® have passed various laboratory tests with flying colors. The properties tested included wear due to sliding friction, surface damage due to sand (falling abrasive test from a height of 1.6 m) and scratch resistance. The tests showed that scratches, for example, penetrate the CoverForm® components to a much smaller depth than comparable PMMA products with conventional scratch-resistant coating, or PC with a polysiloxane coating.
Chemical resistance was also tested by means of the suntan lotion and hand cream test to PV 3964. Even after 24 hours at 80°C with cream applied to the material, there was no change in the scratch resistance and adherence. The surface was not damaged.
The CoverForm® system solution was jointly developed by Evonik and machine builders KraussMaffei. In this process, components made from PLEXIGLAS® cf molding compound are directly coated in the injection mold with a solvent-free multi-component reactive system on an acrylate base.
