The generation of solar energy must become cheaper if solar energy is to pay off financially. This can be achieved by lower manufacturing costs or greater energy yield of the solar modules. With PLEXIGLAS® Solar, Evonik Industries is improving module efficiency.

The product range of the Acrylic Polymers Business Line comprises molding compounds, sheets, tubes and Fresnel lenses for photovoltaics and concentrating photovoltaics. The transmission properties of PLEXIGLAS® Solar are specially adjusted to the spectral response and requirements of solar cells. The material does not yellow or become fragile after long-term exposure to UV light. It was also used a highly transparent cover material for the world’s largest lightweight solar module, owing to its light weight and good impact strength.

Concentrated sunlight
In concentrating photovoltaics, special lenses focus light and concentrate it on a relatively small surface area. PLEXIGLAS® Solar protects the photovoltaic cell and offers optimized energy conversion efficiency by only letting those photons that the cell can actually convert through to the cell.
In addition, PLEXIGLAS® is much more weather-resistant than other plastics. Its transmission remains constant for many years, so that the solar energy can reach the solar cells on a permanent basis. 
The material also offers extremely accurate mold surface reproduction for the special microstructure of Fresnel lenses.

Low weight, special transmission characteristics and high resistance to weathering and UV light are the main reasons why PLEXIGLAS® Solar was chosen as the cover sheet for the world’s largest lightweight solar module. It measures 1.58 by 4 meters at a weight of only 80 kg, making it a real lightweight.
